dc.description | Introduction: Overhead sports generate high overload in the shoulder joint, contributing to changes in the range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength and the occurrence of injuries. Understanding these musculoskeletal changes will contribute to the implementation of improved prevention and rehabilitation strategies. Objective: To systematically review studies that investigated changes in shoulder ROM, muscle strength, and upper limb performance immediately following participation in overhead sports. Methods: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search was conducted in MEDLINE via Ovid, EMBASE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. The Quality Assessment Tool for Before-After Studies (NIH) was used to quantify the risk of bias. Meta-analysis was conducted to verify a clinical change in the outcomes analyzed using standardized mean change (SMC). Results: 33 studies were included in the meta-analysis. There was a decrease in internal rotator [SMC: 0.22; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.06, 0.37] and external rotator muscle strength (SMC: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.07, 0.48), external rotation ROM (SMC: 0.32; IC 95%: 0.08, 0.57) and throwing speed (SMC: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.51) immediately after participation in overhead sports. Conclusion: Internal and external rotator muscles strength of the shoulder and throwing velocity are reduced after real or simulated exposure in overhead match or training. These results will assist clinicians in planning strategies to mitigate the decreases in sports performance in these athletes between matches. | |
