dc.descriptionLa vida útil y la calidad del fruto de pitahaya amarilla (Selenicereus megalanthus Haw.) está en función de la composición físico-química, condiciones ambientales, suelo, manejo pre y poscosecha. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la calidad del fruto y las pérdidas poscosecha de dos variedades de pitahaya amarilla, en función de las épocas de cosecha. La fruta se produjo en las estribaciones de la Cordillera Occidental, Pichincha. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar, en arreglo factorial con 3 repeticiones. Las variedades Palora y Nacional presentaron diferencias estadísticas en tamaño, SST, pH y cantidad exportable de fruta. La cosecha temprana tuvo un efecto positivo en el tamaño y los SST del fruto, más no en el pH. Las pérdidas poscosecha fueron mínimas (1,5%).

The aim of t he study was to evaluated fruit quality and postharvest losses of two varieties of yellow pitahaya, depending on the harvest season. The fruit is produced in the foothills at Andean Northwest of Ecuador. A randomized design of complete block was used in factorial arrangement with three replications. The Palora and National varieties showed statistical differences in size, TSS, pH and amount of exportable fruit. The early harvest had a positive effect on fruit size and TSS , but not in the pH. The postharvest losses were minimal (1.5%).
