dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the present work was to establish the content of secondary metabolites, through phytochemical screening, the concentration of total polyphenols using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and the antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, present in the plant sample Symphytum officinale. The analyzes were carried out in duplicate using a hydroalcoholic extract, demonstrating the presence of secondary metabolites such as reducing sugars, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and tannins. The leaves are the organ that presents a higher concentration of total polyphenolic compounds
7873.48 mg GAE/1000 g compared to the root 5155.98 mg GAE/1000 g. Regarding the antioxidant activity, concentrations in leaves of 2.58 mg/mL IC50 were demonstrated while in the root of 2.72 mg/mL IC50. When analyzing the results, the plant species has abundant inhibitory power of free radicals in both leaves and roots, this is reflected in the concentration of total polyphenols.
