dc.description | Introduction. - Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is one of the pathologies
that is recognized as a set of symptoms and signs that lead to increased work
of breathing, significantly affecting preterm newborns. Objective. - To evaluate
newborns with respiratory distress syndrome in a hospital in the city of
Guayaquil in the year 2021. Methodology. - This is a quantitative, descriptive,
retrospective, cross-sectional study. An indirect observation matrix was
applied through the collection of clinical histories for the registration of
statistical data. Population and Sample. - There are 160 neonates with RDS
attended annually in the NICU area. Equivalent to a sample of 113 neonates
who will be selected by simple random sampling. Results. - The results
showed that most of the neonates who took part in the study were male and
were born during the 34th to 38th week, and it was also identified that the main
cause of RDS in neonates is respiratory distress; According to the Silverman
test, it was observed that in most neonatal patients the respiratory whine is
audible and there is a delay in inspiration. Finally, with respect to the priority
nursing diagnoses, it was identified that most neonates were diagnosed with
impaired spontaneous ventilation and a greater risk of alteration of the
maternal/fetal dyad. Conclusions. The research provided updated information regarding RDS in neonates whose data can serve as a baseline.
