Cultural diversity over time: a critical historiography of the process of creating ancient landscapes in Asturias, Spain

dc.descriptionAncient landscapes are defined here as the accumulation of historical sites from different time periods in a same place. They are not reconstructions of a determined ancient context at a specific point in time. They reflect a historical process, which may be recorded with the help of archaeology and disseminated as cultural heritage. Ancient landscapes reflect the changing nature of human societies and therefore may be used in the education and communication of cultural diversity. The Spanish region of Asturias, in northern Iberia, is used as an illustrative case study. A critical approach is used to analyze the creation of ancient landscapes, looking specifically at the evolution through time of two types of monuments: late prehistoric hillforts (800 BC – AD 100) and early medieval churches (AD 800 – 1000). First, a chronological sequence is established for the creation of ancient landscapes in Asturias, considering the way monuments interacted with past remains through time. Secondly, the role of these monuments is analysed in terms of their importance in 20th C heritage and their projection into the future. The concept of ‘ancient landscape’ is also useful for the promotion of interdisciplinary studies combining archaeology and heritage management.en-US
dc.descriptionEl concepto de ‘paisaje antiguo’ se define en este artículo como la acumulación de lugares históricos de diferentes periodos en un solo espacio. No significa la reconstrucción de un contexto antiguo en un momento determinado del tiempo, sino un proceso histórico, que puede documentarse a través del estudio arqueológico y comunicarse a través de la gestión del patrimonio. Los paisajes antiguos son un reflejo de la naturaleza cambiante de nuestras sociedades y por ello guardan gran potencial para la educación y la comunicación de la diversidad cultural. Se utiliza como caso de estudio la región española de Asturias, ubicada al norte de la península ibérica. Aplicando una aproximación historiográfica, se analiza la creación de paisajes antiguos en relación a dos tipos de monumentos patrimoniales: fortificaciones en altura, conocidas como castros (700 a. C – 100 d. C) e iglesias altomedievales (800 d. C – 1000 d. C). Primero, se establecerá una secuencia temporal para la creación de estos paisajes, atendiendo a la acumulación de monumentos de diferentes periodos y cómo estos, a su vez, se relacionaron con legados históricos de su pasado. En segundo lugar, se llegará a conclusiones sobre el rol de estos paisajes antiguos en el presente, a través de un análisis historiográfico de su gestión patrimonial en el s. xx y las nuevas tendencias proyectadas para el futuro. El ‘paisaje antiguo’ también es un concepto útil para la comunicación interdisciplinar entre la arqueología y la gestión cultural.es-ES
