| dc.description | After a long process of human rights claim of persons with disabilities and, in light of a transition from the rehabilitation model to the social model, a growing visibility of this population is confirmed, which is demanding, in the same way, the creation of evidence based public policies that guarantee their social inclusion. This study pretends to provide statistic information about physical impairments considered one of the dimensions of permanent disability. Using data from the seventh national census in Ecuador – 2010, the prevalence of physical impairments of people who identify themselves as permanently disabled and, in general terms, their socio-demographic profile were estimated. The permanent disability prevalence was estimated at 5.6%, the most common type of disability is the physical (2.1%) followed by visual (1.0%), auditory (0.6%), intellectual (0,6%) and mental (0.3%). The age, male sex and illiteracy are associated with the fact of presenting some type of physical disability. This approach to the reality of physical disability in Ecuador seeks to contribute to the contextualization and implementation of effective and efficient public policies to answer the needs of people with disabilities. Moreover, it will be important to identify the structural and symbolic barriers that each society has on people with disabilities to focus the strategies and redirect the inclusion programs. | en-US |
| dc.description | Luego de un largo proceso para la reivindicación de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad y a la luz de una transición desde el modelo rehabilitador hacia el modelo social. Se confirma una creciente visibilización de esta población que demanda, de la misma manera, la creación de políticas públicas basadas en evidencias que garanticen su inclusión social. Este estudio busca aportar con información estadística sobre la discapacidad permanente. Mediante los datos del Séptimo Censo Nacional de Población en el Ecuador para el año 2010 se estimó la prevalencia de las discapacidad de las personas que se auto identifican como discapacitados permanentes y se caracterizó, de manera general, su perfil socio demográfico. La prevalencia de la discapacidad permanente se estimó en 5,6%; el tipo de discapacidad mas frecuente es la físico motora (2.1%) seguida de la visual (1,0%), auditiva (0,6%), intelectual (0,6%) y mental (0,3%). La edad, el sexo masculino y el no saber leer y escribir se asocia con el hecho de presentar algún tipo de discapacidad permanente. Esta aproximación a la realidad de la discapacidad física en el Ecuador pretende aportar a la contextualización e implementación de políticas públicas eficaces y eficientes que orienten a responder las necesidades de las personas con discapacidad. Además, será de gran importancia identificar las barreras estructurales y simbólicas que cada sociedad ejerce sobre las personas con discapacidad para focalizar las estrategias y redirigir los programas de inclusión. | es-ES |
