dc.description.abstractThis study reviews the history of Media and Information Literacy, its emergence and evolution, up to the great field of knowledge it is today for the professional practice of communication, describing in detail the current information technology tools and the human skills needed to critically evaluate information. In the special case of journalism professionals, media competences required by their profession are analyzed, as well as the types of journalism, according to the nature of the information. Finally, the level of literacy and media competences of the students of the Communication and Journalism majors at the University of Cuenca, is evaluated through a survey designed based on the dimensions proposed by Ferrés & Piscitelli (2012) and applied to a sample of 131 participants, then enriched with the analysis of an interview applied to six teachers.
