The urban expansion of the city of Cuenca towards peripheral areas has experienced a significant increase in recent decades. This process of increasing growth has led to the construction of various forms of urbanization in the territory. In this context, gated residential communities are architectural projects that are placed in the developmental areas of the city, namely the peri-urban areas. These residential nuclei promote changes in the inherent morphology of the places where they are implanted, generating processes of fragmentation and spatial segregation. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the impact on the urban structure of the peri-urban area of Cuenca caused by gated residential communities, specifically focusing on the San Joaquín area. To fulfill this objective, the collection of conceptual background information regarding the peri-urban areas and gated residential communities is proposed, as well as the spatial analysis of these architectural projects at three different scales: medium, immediate, and internal. In essence, this research aims to approach the distinct specific characteristics of gated residential communities that directly influence in the modification of the morphology of the peri-urban areas, through a process of spatial analysis that reveals different events that fragment the space and promote physical, economic, and social segregation.
