The existing information of diagnostic methods on the sagittal and vertical dimensions is extensive, however, there is few literature that indicates which are the available methods that have been developed over time for the diagnosis of dentomaxillary problems in the transversal direction. The importance of the study of the transverse plane in orthodontics is known; furthermore, orthodontists have identified that transverse maxillary deficiencies constitute many of the malocclusions. The objective of this study was to describe different methods implemented through history for the diagnosis of transverse dentomaxillary problems. The methods described included: clinical methods such as observation, palpation and Izard's index; analysis of study models such as Pont index, Korkhaus index, McNamara, Mayoral analysis, Hayes analysis and Andrews element III analysis; Ricketts P-A radiographic method and tomographic methods including the UPenn method. The present literature review was carried out through a bibliographic compilation of studies related to transverse diagnostic methods. It is important that each professional, under their own criteria and based on the information presented, choose the most convenient method.
