dc.descriptionMandibular thrusters are used as an alternative treatment for Class II malocclusion. Mandibular advancement, whether discontinuous with removable appliances or continuous with fixed appliances, causes the teeth, muscles, and bones to change to accommodate a new position and function. Correction of this malocclusion with mandibular thrusters is achieved through orthopedic forces that inhibit growth of the maxilla while stimulating growth of the mandible. The objective of this review is to demonstrate the effectiveness of mandibular thrusters as a viable alternative in the correction of Class II malocclusion. For this, 27 articles from different scientific journals that address dental, skeletal, and soft tissue changes in patients due to the use of mandibular thrusters applied in the treatment of Class II malocclusion were selected. Thus, it is evident that the mandibular thrusters were effective in correcting the main characteristics of Class II malocclusion. In addition, the success of the treatment depends on the pattern of facial growth and the stage of skeletal maturation of the patient at the beginning of the treatment, because individuals at their peak of growth have better adaptive responses.en-US

El avance mandibular ya sea discontinuo con aparatos removibles o continuo con aparatos fijos produce que los dientes, músculos y huesos cambien para adaptarse a una nueva posición y función. La corrección de esta maloclusión con propulsores mandibulares se logra a través de fuerzas ortopédicas que inhiben el crecimiento del maxilar mientras estimulan el crecimiento de la mandíbula. El objetivo de esta revisión es demostrar la efectividad de los propulsores mandibulares como una alternativa viable en la corrección de la maloclusión Clase II. Para ello, se seleccionaron 27 artículos de diferentes revistas científicas que abordan cambios dentales, esqueletales y de tejidos blandos en los pacientes por uso de propulsores mandibulares aplicados en el tratamiento de la maloclusión Clase II. Se evidencia así que los propulsores mandibulares fueron efectivos para corregir las características principales de la maloclusión Clase II. Además, el éxito del tratamiento depende del patrón de crecimiento facial y la etapa de maduración esquelética del paciente al inicio de este; porque los individuos en su pico de crecimiento tienen mejores respuestas adaptativas.es-ES
