dc.description | The heart is recognized as the organ most commonly affected when the individual suffers from type 2 diabetes mellitus. Because of this, many authors have expressed in their writings that people with coronary heart disease have diabetes mellitus as one of their most important risk factors. Based on this background, it was proposed to undertake a study with the aim of analyzing sustained hyperglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus as a risk factor for coronary heart disease in Latin America. A descriptive and analytical type of study was used to provide a pertinent scope for the research objective. This review was based on scientific data sources such as: Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization, PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Redalyc, Springer, books, and health reports. It is necessary to express that use was made of MeSH terms such as: "type 2 diabetes mellitus", "ischemic diseases", "factors", "diagnosis". Boolean operators "and", "or" were also implemented. The results showed that in Latin America the average prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is 16.44%, while the average prevalence of coronary heart disease is 13.35%. Likewise, it was possible to identify that diabetes mellitus 2 and coronary heart disease are related since they share risk factors, symptoms and complications. Finally, it was concluded that sustained hyperglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus does act as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. | en-US |
