dc.descriptionThe contamination of Lake Maracaibo Basin is directly linked to human activities, among which the discharge of wastewater from domestic and industrial, especially the petrochemical industry. This environmental problem has created an ecological imbalance of biotic and abiotic components of the largest estuary in the American continent and the most important in the western Venezuela part, in biological, socioeconomical and political viewpoint, because of its natural riches and geographical location. This review provides a comprehensive view on the environmental impact in the System of Maracaibo, on the bodies of water, biota and fishing. en-US
dc.descriptionLa contaminación de la Cuenca del Lago de Maracaibo está directamente vinculada con las actividades humanas, entre las que destaca la descarga de aguas servidas de origen doméstico e industrial, en especial de la industria petroquímica. Esta problemática ambiental, ha generado un desequilibrio ecológico de los componentes bióticos y abióticos del estuario más grande del continente americano y el más importante del occidente venezolano desde el punto de vista biológico, socioeconómico y político, debido a sus riquezas naturales y a la ubicación geográfica del mismo. La presente revisión, ofrece una visión amplia sobre las repercusiones ecológicas en el Sistema de Maracaibo, sobre los cuerpos de agua, biota y explotación pesquera.es-ES
