dc.descriptionThis study aims to generate a multidisciplinary understanding about the complexity of the historical battle in La Trinidad de Sarapiquí de La Campaña Nacional of 1856-1857, particularly in establishing a baseline diagnosis of the macrostructure, microstructure and elemental chemical analysis of a Minié bullet recovered from this historical event. We therefore carried out the first pilot study of a Minié ball recovered in 2016 in an excavation at the site of La Trinidad, in Sarapiquí, belonging to the Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría. In order to obtain information on both its internal and external structure, the techniques of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-rays were used to determine areas of interest in the bullet and also to specify the composition of the white patina which contains primarily three types of elements: Pb, C and O. Here, we identify the possible presence of cerussite crystals in the lead carbonate surface coating in a 165-year-old Minié bullet. It should be noted that knowing the rifle of origin and its bullet is evidence of great importance to contribute to the reconstruction of the historical context in which this event took place and will therefore allow us to establish which artifacts were being used at the time, both by national and Central American adversaries.en-US
dc.descriptionEste estudio pretende generar un conocimiento integral acerca de la complejidad del hecho histórico de la Batalla en la Trinidad de Sarapiquí de la Campaña Nacional de 1856-1857, particularmente en establecer un diagnóstico de referencia de la macroestructura, microestructura y análisis químico elemental de una munición Minié recuperada de este evento histórico. Por lo tanto, en la investigación reportada aquí se llevó a cabo el primer estudio piloto de una munición tipo Minié recuperada en el 2016 en una excavación en el sitio de La Trinidad, en Sarapiquí, perteneciente al Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría. Con el fin de obtener información tanto de su estructura interna y externa, se utilizaron las técnicas de microscopía óptica, microscopía electrónica de barrido y análisis elemental por energía dispersiva de rayos X para determinar zonas de interés en la munición y además especificar la composición del revestimiento blanco (pátina) el cual contiene primordialmente tres tipos de elementos: Pb, C y O. Aquí también identificamos la posible presencia de cristales de cerusita en el revestimiento superficial de carbonato de plomo en una munición Minié de 165 años de antigüedad. Cabe destacar que, conocer el arma de origen, es evidencia de gran importancia para contribuir a la reconstrucción del contexto histórico en el cual se desarrolló este hecho bélico y nos permitirá establecer cuáles armas se estaban utilizando en la época, tanto por los combatientes nacionales y centroamericanos, así como las armas del ejército filibustero.es-ES
