Metaphors of Latin American cities. Imported, neutral and depoliticized concepts and adjectives?

| dc.description | We live in a time in which the concepts that explain the current urban crisis and transition multiplies in a colossal way: creative, divided, compact, sustainable, fragmented city, and so on. This article addresses the proliferation of adjectives regarding the city of the 21st century and inquires if metaphors are useful to a better understanding of the current city. In this article, we investigate the origin, temporality, territoriality, political vision, and ideological orientation of 31 concepts, some of which even questions the use of the concept “city” to explain current urban processes. Several of the analyzed concepts (like other urban models and public policies) have arisen in other geographical and linguistic basins, but they have reached Latin America and are currently in common use for different actors. We present how some concepts have been coined by international organizations to mitigate the effects of neoliberal capitalism in cities, while other concepts are promoted by private companies (Smart cities) or by pro - entrepreneurialism “academics” (Creative cities). Many others also have been produced by critical scholars. For some colleagues, the enormous number and diversity of surnames that we give to the cities are evidence that we do not agree on what is happening with them, while for others this multiplication —far from enriching— impoverishes the urban studies. However, we consider that some analyzed concepts are more than metaphors and constitute very enriching conceptual tools for critical, deneutralized, and repolitized urban studies. | en-US |
| dc.description | Vivimos en una época en que los conceptos para explicar la crisis y las transiciones urbanas actuales se multiplican de manera colosal: ciudad creativa, dividida, compacta, sustentable, fragmentada, etc. Este artículo aborda la proliferación de adjetivos sobre la ciudad del siglo XXI y se pregunta si son útiles las metáforas para entender mejor a la ciudad actual. En este artículo indagamos el origen, temporalidad, territorialidad, visión política y orientación ideológica de 31 conceptos, algunos de ellos que incluso cuestionan el uso del concepto “ciudad” para explicar los procesos urbanos actuales. Varios de estos conceptos aquí analizados (como otros modelos urbanos y políticas públicas) han surgido en cuencas geográficas y lingüísticas diversas, pero han llegado a América Latina y actualmente son de uso común para distintos actores. Se presenta el cómo algunos conceptos han sido acuñados por organismos internacionales para mitigar los efectos del capitalismo neoliberal en las ciudades. Otros conceptos son más bien promovidos por empresas privadas (Smart cities) o “académicos” pro empresariales (Ciudades creativas), en tanto que muchos otros han sido producidos por académicos críticos. Para algunos colegas, la enorme cantidad y diversidad de apellidos que damos a las ciudades son una evidencia de que no nos ponemos de acuerdo en qué es lo que está pasando con ellas, en tanto que para otros colegas esta multiplicación, lejos de enriquecer, empobrece los estudios urbanos. Sin embargo, consideramos que algunosconceptos analizados son más que metáforas y constituyen riquísimas herramientas conceptuales para los estudios urbanos críticos, desneutralizados y repolitizados. | es-ES |
