dc.descriptionThis essay presents the current status of Spanish ‘in’ and ‘of’ the United States and discusses the phenomenon popularly called Spanglish through the reflections of several scholars on the subject. The literature in linguistics has acknowledged that what in lay terms people call Spanglish, relies on code-switching and code-mixing, switches and mixtures, which can also be described as characteristics of the hybrid identity of many U.S. Latinos. In this paper, I examine this phenomenon of Spanglish from the perspective of mixed identities in intercultural contexts. Finally, I reflect on some significant points to try to deepen and better understand the complex situation of Spanish and the much commented on phenomena surrounding the use of Spanglish in this country.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente ensayo muestra el estado del español ‘en’ y ‘de’ los Estados Unidos y del llamado –popularmente– spanglish, a través de las reflexiones de varios estudiosos sobre el tema. El cambio de códigos (code-switching) y la mezcla de códigos (code-mixing) entre el inglés y el español –manifestaciones que diversos investigadores consideran típicas del spanglish–, representan el modelo de la identidad mestiza de muchos latinos en los Estados Unidos. En este trabajo se pretende también observar el spanglish desde la perspectiva de las identidades mixtas en contextos interculturales. Finalmente, tratamos de reflexionar sobre algunos puntos para intentar profundizar y comprender la compleja situación del español en este país, y del tan discutido spanglish.es-ES
