During the first months of the IRAS mission the science team attempted to conduct a series of calibration observations of α Lyrae (Vega), however, they unexpectedly found this star to be a copious IR source, with an emission at 60 and 100 μm far in excess to what was expected for a 10000 K blackbody, representing Vegas photosphere Aumann et al. [1984]. This indeed corresponds to one of the most important discoveries of the IRAS mission, perhaps, comparable with the also unexpected IR radiation detected from numerous early type galaxies which, until then, were considered devoid of significant amounts of interstellar matter.
