The basic material and optical properties of chromium-doped nanophase-separated yttria–alumina–silica (YAS) glassbased optical preforms andfibers, fabricated through themodified chemical vapor deposition process in conjunctionwith solution doping technique under suitable thermal annealingconditions are reported. The size of the phase-separated particleswithin the core of the annealed preform is around 20–30 nmwhich is significantly reduced to around 5.0 nm in the drawnfiber. The absorption spectra offibers drawn from the annealedand non-annealed preform samples revealed the presenceof Cr4þ,Cr3þ, and Cr6þspecie. Numerically, extinction ofabsorption drops3–3.5 times for the annealed sample as aresult of nano-phase restructuration during annealing process.Intense broadband emission (within 500–800 nm) in case ofthe annealed preform sample is observed as compared tothe non-annealed one and is associated with the presence ofCr3þions in nanostructured environment inside the YAS coreglass. Thefinalfibers show broadband emission ranging from900 to 1400 nm under pumping at 1064 nm which is attributedmainly to the presence of Cr3þ/Cr4þions. The fabricatedfibersseem to be a potential candidate for the development offiberlaser sources for the visible and near-infra ranges and foreffective Q-switching units for1–1.1mm all-fiber ytterbiumlasers
