dc.descriptionDue to the prestige achieved in the fight against the dictatorship of Ulises Heureaux (1884-1899), the various political forces at the beginning of the 20th century considered the businessman Juan Isidro Jimenes as the ideal candidate to replace the dictator. Jimenes proposed to execute a liberal government, respectful of the principles that guide the functioning of a democracy, as well as the solution of the inherited financial disorder and the solution of the onerous external debt whose exaggerated dimension threatened even the existence of the Dominican nation itself. However, the enormous weight of despotism and militarism thwarted his project, and after radical opposition from Congress, rebellions, and hostility from the press, Vice President Horacio Vásquez launched a coup d’état.en-US
dc.descriptionPor el prestigio alcanzado en la lucha contra la dictadura de Ulises Heureaux (1884-1899), las diversas fuerzas políticas de inicios del siglo XX consideraron al empresario Juan Isidro Jimenes como el candidato ideal para sustituir el dictador. Jimenes propuso ejecutar un gobierno liberal, respetuoso de los principios que pautan el funcionamiento de una democracia, así como la solución del desorden financiero heredado y la solución de la onerosa deuda externa cuya exagerada dimensión amenazaba hasta la existencia de la propia nación dominicana. Sin embargo, el enorme peso del despotismo y el militarismo troncharon su proyecto, y luego de una oposición radical del Congreso, rebeliones y hostilidad de la prensa, el vicepresidente Horacio Vásquez le propinó un golpe de Estado.es-ES
