dc.descriptionIn this article we analyze aspects related to the Dominican society of the six hundred, such as freedom and debauchery. It was a much more tolerant and permissive society than the Spanish, where there were also cases of cohabitation, rape and rape. But there were two differences: one, in Spain there were fewer cases due to the pressure exerted by both the Church and the State. And two, impunity was limited to slaves and those free women who were not sufficiently protected, that is, who remained single or widowed and did not live under the protection of any man.On the other hand, in Hispaniola, power was in the hands of the Creole oligarchy that acted practically outside the control of the metropolitan and viceroyalty authorities. All this allowed a more open society, although, on occasions, also more immoral, generating excesses such as adultery, sodomy or cohabitation. Not even the most protected women, those of lineage, were safe from abuse.en-US
dc.descriptionEn este artículo analizamos aspectos relacionados con la sociedad dominicana del seiscientos, como la libertad y el libertinaje. Se trataba de una sociedad mucho más tolerante y permisiva que la española, donde también se daban casos de amancebamientos, de estupros y de violaciones. Pero había dos diferencias: una, en España eran menos los casos por la presión que ejercían tanto la Iglesia como el Estado. Y dos, la impunidad se limitaba a las esclavas y a aquellas mujeres libres que no estaban suficientemente protegidas, es decir, que permanecían solteras o viudas y no vivían bajo la protección de ningún varón. En cambio, en La Española, el poder estaba en manos de la oligarquía criolla que actuaba prácticamente al margen del control de las autoridades metropolitanas y virreinales. Todo ello permitió una sociedad más abierta, aunque, en ocasiones, también más inmoral, generando excesos como el adulterio, la sodomía o el amancebamiento. Ni las mujeres más protegidas, las de linaje, estaban a salvo de los abusos.es-ES
