dc.descriptionPhyllanthus orbicularis is a Cuban endemic plant that grows in most of the serpentine regions of Cuba and has been shown to have excellent antimutagenic and antiviral properties. During the review of herbarium sheets, specialized literature and observations on the field, morphological differences were found between the specimens of P. orbicularis, among which a group of plants from the northeastern Cuba region differed from the rest of the plants found in the other regions from the country. The present study had as objective to verify the existence of morphological differences between the variants of P. orbicularis that allowed their separation or not in independent taxa. The populations of Cajálbana (Pinar del Río), Galindo (Mayabeque), Los Caneyes (Villa Clara), Ceja de Melones, La Cueva and Yamanigüey (Holguín) were visited. In each region samples of branches, flowers and fruits of 10 individuals by population were taken. Comparisons were made between the plants of these localities in terms of vegetative and reproductive morphological characters, both qualitative and quantitative, the latter being statistically supported. The results obtained proved the existence of distinctive characters in the plants of La Cueva and Yamanigüey from those of the other localities analyzed, which were: length and number of leaves of the flowering branches, form of the leaves, as well as the color and dimensions of the flowers. dc.descriptionPhyllanthus orbicularis es una planta endémica cubana que crece en la mayoría de las regiones serpentínicas del país, sus extractos han demostrado excelentes propiedades antimutagénicas y antivirales. Durante la revisión de materiales de herbario, bibliografía especializada y observaciones en el campo, se encontraron diferencias morfológicas entre los ejemplares de P. orbicularis, entre los que se diferenciaba un grupo de plantas de Cuba nororiental del resto de las plantas encontradas en las otras regiones del país. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo comprobar la existencia de diferencias morfológicas entre las variantes de P. orbicularis que permitieran su separación o no en taxones independientes. Para ello se visitaron las poblaciones: Cajálbana (Pinar del Río), Galindo (Mayabeque), Los Caneyes (Villa Clara), Ceja de Melones, La Cueva y Yamanigüey (Holguín). En cada región se tomaron muestras de ramas, flores y frutos de 10 individuos por población. Se realizaron comparaciones entre las plantas de dichas localidades en cuanto a caracteres morfológicos vegetativos y reproductivos, tanto cualitativos como cuantitativos, estos últimos soportados estadísticamente. Los resultados obtenidos probaron la existencia de caracteres distintivos en las plantas de La Cueva y Yamanigüey de las del resto de las localidades analizadas, como son: longitud y número de hojas de las ramas floríferas, forma de la lámina de las hojas, así como el color y dimensiones de las flores.
