Medicina interna, cirugía de tejidos blandos y diagnóstico por imágenes en caninos y felinos de compañía en el Hospital Veterinario Dr. Cedeño y en el Centro de Diagnóstico por Imágenes Invet Diagnóstico, San José, Costa Rica

Abstract

La pasantía fue realizada en el Hospital Veterinario Dr. Cedeño (HVDC), en Pavas, San José, y en el centro de diagnóstico por imágenes Invet Diagnóstico, en San Pedro, Montes de Oca, entre el 28 de febrero y el 13 de mayo del 2022, con un total de 344 horas cumplidas. Entre ambos establecimientos se atendió un total de 697 pacientes, 85,08% (n=593/697) caninos y 14,92% (n=104/697) felinos. Durante este periodo, se participó en 532 consultas y 80 cirugías de tejidos blandos, únicamente realizadas en HVDC, y 340 pruebas de diagnóstico por imágenes entre ambos centros. Del total de consultas, el motivo más frecuente fue por medicina preventiva con 17,67% (n=94/532). Además, las afecciones del sistema tegumentario con 14,66% (n=78/532) y digestivo con 14,10% (n=75/532) representan la mayor cantidad de alteraciones por las cuales los propietarios deciden llevar a los caninos y felinos a consulta veterinaria. En el área de cirugía de tejidos blandos, sobresalieron los abordajes del sistema reproductor con 47 procedimientos, lo que representa un 58,75%, siendo las ovariohisterectomías y las orquiectomías las más realizadas. En cuanto al diagnóstico por imágenes, los ultrasonidos abdominales fueron los más prominentes, y el mayor motivo para la realización de estos fueron las alteraciones digestivas. Por su parte, las tomas radiográficas predominantes fueron las de tórax, seguidas por las de esqueleto axial y apendicular, y por último las de abdomen, y la razón más frecuente consistió en alteraciones musculoesqueléticas.

An internship was carried out at Hospital Veterinario Dr. Cedeño (HVDC), in Pavas, San José, and at the imaging center Invet Diagnóstico, in San Pedro, Montes de Oca, between February 28th and May 13th, 2022, with a total of 344 hours completed. Between both establishments, veterinary care was provided to 697 patients, 85,08% (n=593/697) canines and 14,92% (n=104/697) felines. During this period, 532 consultations and 80 soft-tissue surgeries were carried out, only at HVDC, and 340 diagnostic imaging tests at both centers. Of the total consultations, the most frequent reason was preventive medicine with 17,67% (n=94/532). In addition, disorders of the integumentary system with 14,66% (n=78/532) and digestive system with 14,10% (n=75/532) represent the largest number of alterations for which owners decide to take canines and felines to veterinary consultation. In terms of soft-tissue surgery, the approaches to the reproductive system stood out with 47 procedures, which represents 58,75%, with ovariohysterectomies and orchiectomies being the most performed. Regarding diagnostic imaging, abdominal ultrasounds were the most prominent, and the main reason for performing these was digestive disorders. On the other hand, the predominant radiographic images taken were those of the thorax, followed by those of the axial and appendicular skeleton, and finally those of the abdomen, and the most frequent reason was musculoskeletal alterations.
