| dc.description | This article aims to address the religious context and how it was experienced in one of the most important cities of the Portuguese colony in America in the 18th century. The ways in which the city’s foundation took place, the overcoming of natural challenges, as well as the urban transformations in this century, express not only its physical physiognomy, but also social, economic, political aspects and, above all, as is the case in this analysis, the religious scope, which changes, alongside the other aspects. This change represents Rio de Janeiro in the most diverse manners and characteristics of its religious life.

| dc.description | Este artigo tem por objetivo aproximar-se do contexto religioso e de suas vivências em uma das cidades mais importantes da colônia portuguesa na América no século XVIII. As formas como transcorreram a implantação da cidade, a superação dos desafios naturais, bem como as transformações urbanas ao longo deste período, expressam aspectos não só da sua fisionomia física, mas social, econômica, política e, sobretudo, como é o caso desta análise, do âmbito religioso.
