This research aims at investigating the existence of cognitive motivations for distinguishing prepositional noun adjuncts (AA) from noun complements (CN). After checking the criteria in Prescriptive and Descriptive Grammars (GN/DG) related to AA and CN, it is possible to make the following generalizations: a) AA and CN can connect to nouns that indicate action and the term in question will be CN when it is patient of action expressed by the noun and will be AA when it is an agent; b) CNs do not bind to concrete nouns; c) all phrases in the form "de + X" connected to a noun, will be post-modifiers of that noun. This paper proposes a verification, using Frame Semantics (Fillmore,1975) and Conceptual Blending Theory (Fauconnier and Turner, 1995, 1998, 2002), in order to validate these generalizations, by analyzing the blending type formed by the union between nouns (concrete and action indicators) and nominal or adjectival terms.
