dc.description.abstractThe shared economy is a recent theme of contemporary society, and there is a growth of organizations with this profile, as Uber, Airbnb, CouchSurfing, among others. Belk (2010) points out two emerging consumer behavior practices shared economy: sharing and collaborative consumption. In the context of tourism and hospitality, we see the power of these new startups shared economy for their high growth rate and the impact on the tourism industry. The objective of this theoretical essay is to discuss how the sharing and the sharing economy have been applied to tourism.The work explores two emblematic cases of shared hosting platforms: CouchSurfing, which encourages sharing, as well as AirBnb, which stimulates collaborative consumption.
