After launching the Protocol "Safe Surgery Saves Lives" by WHO in 2008, several studies on its implementation were conducted worldwide. The authors of the analyzed articles revealed the barriers and difficulties encountered by the institutions in the protocol implementation, and the benefits that this has brought. This study aimed to describe aspects of the implementation of safe surgery protocol in Brazil and abroad. In order to achieve the objective of this study it was established as a research method integrative literature review. This study is justified by the importance of the issue worldwide, as the great benefits that the WHO protocol deployment brings to patients who will undergo surgery. They analyzed 18 articles published from 2009 to 2015, being developed by doctors and nurses and with the year 2012 with the highest number of publications. After analysis of the articles it can be concluded that there are still shortcomings in the implementation of the Protocol, including the need for engagement of institutions, in order to reduce adverse events in surgeries, thus bringing benefits to the institution and especially for the patient.
