The immaturity of physiological systems and an ineffective defense mechanisms of canine and feline neonates resulte in a bigger vulnerability of these animals to the adverse environmental effects, determining a high mortality rate in the first weeks of life. It is often necessary, resorting to drug therapy to reverse the disease and establish the convalescence. Little information is available in the literature concerning the use of drugs in neonates, that must be distinguished due to differences in the pharmacokinetics of these patients and their high pharmacological sensitivity, manifested by exaggerated or prolonged effects after administration of drugs in conventional dosage. The aim of this review is to present relevant aspects of the development of neonatal dogs and cats emphasizing their physiological and therapeutic particularities with the approach of some of the main drugs used, thus aiming to provide clinical benefit for pet animals to better treatment of pediatric patients.
