Hashtags are prevalent in the interpersonal spaces of Twitter, as well as in the debates on many different subjects. A hashtag usually encourages people to start discussions about a proposed topic. The number of responses co-occurring with a given hashtag represents attention to manifest content by others, to which respondents actively reply (GODIN et al, 2013). Taking the pervasive use of hashtags in digital communication (DC) into account, the aim of this paper is to analyze the hashtags used by Brazilian Internet users for verbal attack. Overall, our results indicate that hashtags prompted offensive and impolite language uses, notably very prevalent in DC, which was found to be licentious and permissive.
