Among the various processes of a mineral exploration in an open pit mining operation, we have in the activities of loading and hauling one of the main production costs. Aiming at the constant search for cost reduction and productivity increase, it requires an ideal fleet sizing considering the operating conditions observed in the mine. In other words, larger load and haul equipment’s does not always offer a lower cost per ton moved, since greater productivity comes also with higher costs and more complexity in their maintenance and operation. The present study demonstrated, through a case study, the ideal fleet sizing of loading and haul machines for a virtual exploration of the Mina do Sapo section. In this study carried out for an open pit mine operation, the analysis method took into account the information provided by equipment manufacturers, in addition to scientific articles and academic studies. Finally, a validation of the virtual section of the mine was carried out and a simulation in an electronic spreadsheet was done to determine the size of the machine’s fleet. From what was exposed in the present study, it was concluded that there is a relationship between load capacities and productivity when selecting a load and haul fleet. So, to achieve greater productivity and an optimal production cost, it is necessary that the sizes of the equipment used to load and haul transport are aligned.
