Infections related to the Health Service (IRAS) now account for high morbidity and mortality. The bloodstream infections (BSI) are among the most frequent IRAS. This narrative review was to compare and discuss the criteria of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and surveillance of bloodstream infections associated with central catheter (CVC). It is considered that the reporting of bloodstream infections associated with catheters (ICSAC), both as to the NHSN to ANVISA, with its peculiarities, should follow well-established criteria. The biggest difference relates to the consideration of the criteria of sepsis in newborns and infants only to the NHSN, the sepsis ANVISA considered regardless of age of the patient. Both criteria, NHSN and ANVISA, facilitate the notification and allow comparison of indicators between institutions.
