Access to knowledge can determine the chances of success of a new venture. Studies show the role of networks for entrepreneurship, because through them entrepreneurs can access important resources to support the path of ideation, maintenance, and growth of a new company. It is worth highlighting the relevance of networks for ventures in the life sciences area, specifically those that work with biotechnology, because they require dedication in terms of scientific development, high initial investment due to the need for a specific physical structure with equipped laboratories, materials, and highly skilled labor. Given this context, the present work explored through a documentary research the main networks focused on biotechnology established in Brazil and also in some Latin American countries. The purpose of the desk research was not only to identify the networks, but also to investigate whether these networks had a specific purpose connected to entrepreneurship. We identified 15 institutions, 6 of them operating in the national territory and 9 with international operations. A survey was also conducted through an online questionnaire that counted with the participation of 10 people, 5 Brazilians, 4 Mexicans and 1 Bolivian, 9 of whom are currently entrepreneurs or have been entrepreneurs at some point in their professional career. The questionnaire explored aspects related to the perception of entrepreneurs in relation to the role that networks have played or play in their entrepreneurial trajectory. Among the results achieved through the questionnaire it is possible to state that the research participants recognize a positive association between the fact that they are linked to a network and the success of their business. They recognize the access to knowledge that favored both the establishment of the business and generated new opportunities.
