Resolution 4,434 / 2015 of the National Monetary Council established that the classic credit unions that hold an average of the total assets in the last three fiscal years, equal to or greater than fifty million reais, and the full credit unions, should adopt an integrated administrative structure by Board of Directors and executive board subordinate to it, being prohibited the simultaneous exercise of positions in the board of directors and in the board of directors, and should implement this structure in the first election of administrators, held from 2017. Therefore, the present study was general objective is to analyze whether there is a duality between the president of the cooperative and the chairman of the board of directors in Brazilian credit unions, and what is the relationship between this structure of governance and the financial performance of these cooperatives in 2015. For this purpose, model of multiple linear regression of types cross-sectional area. It was verified that for the year 2015, it can not be affirmed that the duality exerts influence on the performance of the Brazilian credit unions. However, since the resolution prohibits the simultaneous exercise of positions, after 2017, the discussion of whether duality affects performance is an emerging theme and demands further research with a longer time horizon. In this context, this study helps in the discussion of how regulatory policies can have an effect on cooperatives, as well as contribute to the discussion of the governance structure by the credit unions themselves.
