The generation of solid wastes is one of the main environmental problems in urban locations. One of the goals of education is promoting an environmental conscience through educational strategies that may help its development. This paper presents the design and implementation of a computational simulation aimed at developing science procedures which may allow the students to visualize the consequences of the actions that each one of the stakeholders make in simulated situations of solid waste management. The population and the amount of waste generated by each person are defined within the simulation and a database has been predefined to include patterns composition, separation and final disposition of wastes. Computations are carried out using MS Excel and Visual Basic is used to implement the user interface. The simulation is being tested at present to evaluate its usefulness as a learning tool.
