Recovering alcoholics identify and develop tools to face the different reasons that condition and maintain their consumption, but several conflictive situations can cause an imbalance in their recovery process and provoke the appearance of anxiety levels depending on how they face such situations. For this reason, the general objective of the research was to determine the relationship between anxiety levels and coping strategies in adult recovering alcoholics. The study had a quantitative approach with a non-experimental cross-sectional design with a correlational scope. The population consisted of 100 male adult recovering alcoholics attending 17 support groups in the city of Cuenca, with a mean age of 50 years. The instruments used were the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) in their versions adapted to Spanish, which had an α= .93. As results, minimal anxiety levels were obtained; while, the most used coping strategies were problem avoidance and social withdrawal. Likewise, it was determined that there is a weak negative correlation between cognitive restructuring and anxiety levels. On the contrary, a moderate positive correlation was observed between anxiety levels and the coping strategies of emotional expression, self-criticism and social withdrawal. In conclusion, recovering male alcoholics possess minimal levels of anxiety and use the coping strategies of problem avoidance and social withdrawal.
