One of the most critical parameters that define the behavior of a structure in the face of a seismic movement is the inherent damping, which is the focus of this titling work, analyzing the effect of its variation in the Energy Balance and Performance Analysis. In the Energy Balance, different case studies will be analyzed, with the inherent damping values to be used: 1%, 2%, 2.5%, and 5%; focusing on the value of 2.5% for the analysis of the stiffness matrix, the following types being used: initial stiffness matrix, initial stiffness matrix assigned with regions, tangential stiffness matrix, and tangential stiffness matrix set with regions. For the levels of seismic intensity, the performance analysis is carried out based on story drifts through non-linear dynamic analysis to verify the correct functioning of the structural elements under seismic loads. This will be done through a contrast with the permissible values of the residual and maximum drifts. After this investigation, it can be noted the significant effect of the inherent damping value used for the analysis in terms of the percentages of dissipated energy and its distribution in the different elements of the structure. However, for the performance analysis, very little variation is evidenced in terms of the maximum average floor drifts, obtaining similar results with all the damping values used.
