The institutional reception of children and adolescents, in many countries and especially Ecuador, is a legal, temporary and transitory protection measure that seeks the guarantee of rights; however, it becomes a measure that violates rights, due to the prolonged per-manence in institutions, in the so-called “shelters”. This measure, in most cases, does not address aspects of origin or origin of the child and adolescent such as: age, gender, culture, language, among others; being located in foster homes that do not respond to the superior interest or specificity of the subject. In Ecuador, the legal measure with the greatest application is institutional care. The present article is a bibliographic review and analysis document that seeks to present a general vision about the alternative modalities of fostering in other countries, showing its positive and negative aspects and its applicabil-ity in Ecuador
