The objective of the present investigation was to determine the level of adherence in steel plates subjected to surface preparation under the SSPC-SP-5 NACE 1 standard, for which it was necessary to prepare the plates that were going and those that were not going to have sandblasting. The preparation of the steel plates utilizing sandblasting is the first step to know if the plate adhesion improves in the end, for which sample plates were established. Those plates were not subjected to surface preparation to make a comparison. The roughness of the plates with and without surface preparation was then measured. The environmental conditions were also measured to be able to apply the first layer and measure wet film thicknesses. The paint was allowed to cure for a day to proceed to apply the second layer of paint. In the same way, the wet film thicknesses were measured, and the plates were allowed to cure, but in this layer for 3 days. Then we proceeded to perform the ultrasound, holiday, X cut and pull off tests to obtain the data for the analysis of the results. Python was used for the statistical analysis; through this software, the Shapiro Wilks tests were applied for the normality tests, the data normalization technique through bootstrapping, the t-test for data comparison and to know whether or not it improves adhesion to the plates. In addition, the permutation test was used to compare the qualitative samples of the X-cut test. Thus, after analyzing the results, it is concluded that adhesion improves with the surface preparation of the steel plates under the standard mentioned above in relation to plates where no surface preparation was performed. It is recommended to carry out more complementary tests, especially those of pull-off.
