dc.description.abstract | Due to the limited knowledge about the health status of livestock belonging to indigenous communities from Patagonia, a study was conducted involving 47 cattle holders from Millaín Currical Community in Neuquén province, Argentina. Clinical examination, including tuberculin skin test, the collection of blood and fecal matter samples from 350 bovines were carried out. A field search was done looking for toxic plants and a Knowledge, Atitude and Practice study (KAP) was performed with the participating holders. Clinical examination showed the presence of Damalinia bovis (95%) and mild diarrhea (7,3%). No cases of foot rot, eye cancer and tuberculosis were detected. The serological studies detected positive animals to Brucella abortus due to vaccination (1.16%), Neospora caninum (17.7%), Rotavirus (86.6%), Bovine herpes virus (53%), Bovine diarrhea virus (66.6%) and Parainfluenza 3 virus (100%). The coproparasitological analysis showed an average of 80 hpg in calves and 39 hpg in adult cattle for gastrointestinal nematodes. Eggs corresponding to tapeworms, coccidia and Fasciola hepatica were detected in 9.7%, 71% and 41.3% of calves and in 3.3%, 62.7% and 56.7% of adult cattle, respectively. Six potentially toxic plants were detected without registering clinical cases.
