A desarticulação do monomito do herói em Beowulf

Abstract

Este trabalho faz uma análise do poema épico anglo-saxão Beowulf, oriundo da tradição oral germânica, dando ênfase ao herói que dá o título. Em todo o caminho seguido pelo protagonista da história, ele distancia-se de formas tradicionais de heróis medievais e da Antiguidade, cujas missões baseavam-se em fatores exteriores e não introspectivos. O objetivo proposto é demonstrar como Beowulf, em toda sua estratégia para combater monstros malignos, busca não só seu reconhecimento como grande herói, mas também um modo de viver eternamente. O herói demonstra medo, impertinência e falhas em sua jornada, tendo uma profundidade maior do que foi pensado anteriormente pela crítica literária. A partir de estudos de críticos que se aplicaram a questões sobre o desenvolvimento da figura do herói, mostraremos como tais classificações não condizem com o modo que Beowulf é apresentado em sua história. Com base em autores como Eliade, Lévi-Strauss, Frye, Cassirer, entre outros, discutiremos a ideia de mito na jornada do personagem, além de estudar de que maneira o texto é construído. Desta forma, debruçar-nos-emos principalmente sobre O herói de mil faces (The Hero of a Thousand Faces, 1949), de Joseph Campbell. Nesta obra, o estudioso apresenta a ideia de “monomito”, um percurso que seria, em teoria, visto em heróis típicos medievais. Percebemos, no entanto, que Beowulf possui diversas discrepâncias frente ao que foi elaborado por Campbell, sendo assim necessária uma análise acerca da profundidade encontrada no personagem. O trabalho também será baseado em outros críticos necessários para o estudo de poesias anglo-saxões, como Borges, Heaney, Kaske e Tolkien, para que assim possamos compreender melhor as motivações do guerreiro anglo-saxão no poema.

This work analyses the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, from the German oral tradition, emphasizing on the hero whose name is in the title. Throughout the path followed by the protagonist of the story, he distances himself from the traditional forms of medieval and ancient heroes, whose missions where based on external and not introspective factors. The proposed objective is to demonstrate how Beowulf, in all its strategy to fight evil monsters, searches not only his recognition as a great hero but also a way to live forever. The hero demonstrates fear, impertinence and failures in his journey, having a greater depth than what was previously considered by literary critics. From critical studies that researched about questions on the development of the hero figure, we intend to show how such characteristics are not equivalent to the way that Beowulf is portrayed in his story. Based on authors such as Eliade, Lévi-Strauss, Frye, Cassirer, among others, we will discuss the idea of the myth in the character’s journey in addition to studying the way the text is constructed. This way, we will focus mainly on The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), by Joseph Campbell. In this work the author presents the idea of the “monomyth”, a path that would, in theory, be seen in typical medieval heroes. We realize, however, that Beowulf has several discrepancies compared to what was elaborated by Campbell, thus needing an analysis related to the depth found in the character. The work will also be based on other critics for the study of the Anglo-Saxon poetry such as Borges, Heaney, Kaske and Tolkien so that we can better understand the motivations of the Anglo-Saxon warrior on the poem.
