Taphonomic signatures of an algal reef of high energy and low turbidity: Example of the only Atoll in the South Atlantic

| dc.description | Taphonomic reef studies are concentrated in models elaborated for Cenozoic coral reefs. Seeking to elaborate a set of taphonomic signatures applicable to an algal reef, samples from the Rocas Atoll (Equatorial South Atlantic, Brazil) were analyzed. The carbonate facies (Framestone I and II) show small variability allowing for the formation of a taphonomic criteria indicative of algal reefs with insignificant influence of terriginous grains, with low turbidity and high energy. The calcareous algae represent the dominating taphocoenosis bioconstructor. Calcareous encrustations of coralline algae, vermetid gastropods, bryozoans and foraminifers are thick extensively distributed encrustation. The bioerosion of clasts and samples of the paleo-reef are dominated by traces of sponges (Cliona), polychaetes, sipunculids and, in lesser proportion, bivalve mollusks. The high diversity of cementing organisms, presence of aragonitics and calcitic cements and exclusively carbonate sedimentation are important taphonomic signatures. The energy of the waves and, especially, the holocenic eustatic variations were important taphonomic factors generators of the reef growing development. The taphonomic signatures are a potential tool for the recognition and interpretation of algal reef with similar environmental characteristics and for understanding the geobiologic history of the Equatorial South Atlantic Atoll. | en-US |
| dc.description | Os estudos tafonômicos recifais estão concentrados em modelos elaborados para recifes de corais do Cenozóico. Visando elaborar um conjunto de assinaturas tafonômicas aplicáveis a um recife algálico, analisaram-se amostras recifais do Atol das Rocas (Atlântico Sul Equatorial, Brasil). As fácies carbonáticas (Framestone I e II) demostraram pequena variabilidade permitindo a formação de um critério tafonômico indicativo de recifes algálicos com insignificante influência de materiais terrígenos, com baixa turbidez e de alta energia. As algas calcáreas representam a tafocenose bioconstrutora dominante. Encontraram-se grossas e amplamente distribuídas encrustações calcárias de algas coralinas, gastrópodes vermetídeos, briozoários e foraminíferos. A bioerosão dos clastos e amostras do paleorecife foram dominadas por traços de esponjas (Cliona), poliquetas, sipunculídeos e, em menor proporção, moluscos bivalves. A alta diversidade de organismos cimentadores, presença de cimentos aragoníticos e calcíticos na cimentação inter-granular e sedimentação exclusivamente carbonática são importantes assinaturas tafonômicas encontradas. A energia das ondas e, principalmente, as variações eustáticas holocênicas foram importantes fatores tafonômicos geradores dos depósitos sedimentares recifais deste recife oceânico. As assinaturas tafonômicas encontradas têm um forte potencial como ferramenta para o reconhecimento e interpretação de recifes algálicos com características ambientais semelhantes e para o entendimento da história geobiológica do único Atol do Atlântico Sul Equatorial. | pt-BR |
