| dc.description | In the Distrito Federal (DF), Brazil, land use and land cover mappings have been obtained from optical images, though radar data are also a valuable alternative since they are independent of solar illumination and the microwave radiation can penetrate clouds and depict differences in canopy structures. In this aspect, the goal of this study is to analyze the potential of ALOS PALSAR data for land use and land cover mapping of DF at a scale compatible with 1:100,000. L-band, HH, HV and VV-polarized amplitude images from the end of wet season (April 25th, 2007) were converted into radar backscattering coefficients and processed through the image segmentation technique by growing region, available in the SPRING image processing software package. The segments were exported into the ArcGIS 9.2TM geographical information system software package as shapefile format. The corresponding land use and land cover class of each polygon was identified visually in the computer screen (visual interpretation). The folloowing thematic classes were discriminated: consolidate urban areas; urban areas in consolidation; natural grasslands; Cerrado shrubland; croplands; gallery forest; indiscriminated forests; pasturelands; reforestations; and water reservoirs. Cerrado shrubland, with 39,990 ha, was the most representative mapping class of the study area, followed by consolidated urban areas and natural grassland, with 29,950 ha and 27,918 ha, respectively. | dc.description | No Distrito Federal (DF), mapas de uso e cobertura da terra têm sido obtidos com base em imagens ópticas, embora imagens de radar também se constituam em uma alternativa viável, pois independem das condições de iluminação solar e a radiação em microondas tem ainda a capacidade de atravessar nuvens e detectar diferenças nas estruturas da vegetação. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo é analisar o potencial das imagens de radar da plataforma ALOS PALSAR para o mapeamento de uso e cobertura da terra do DF em uma escala compatível com 1:100.000. Imagens em amplitude na banda L e polarizações HH, HV e VV do final da estação chuvosa (25 de abril de 2007) foram convertidas para coeficientes de retroespalhamento e processadas pela técnica de segmentação de imagens por crescimento de regiões, disponível no programa de processamento de imagens SPRING. Os segmentos foram exportados para o aplicativo de sistema de informações geográficas ArcGIS 9.2TM no formato shape. A classe correspondente de uso e cobertura da terra de cada polígono foi identificada visualmente na tela de computador (interpretação visual). As seguintes classes temáticas foram discriminadas: Áreas Urbanas consolidadas; Áreas Urbanas em consolidação; Campos; Cerrado Típico; Culturas Agrícolas; Mata de Galeria; Matas Indiscriminadas; Pastagens Cultivadas; Reflorestamentos; e Reservatórios. Cerrado Típico, com 39.990 ha, foi a classe de mapeamento mais representativa da área de estudo, seguida de Áreas Urbanas consolidadas e Campos, com 29.950 ha e 27.918 ha, respectivamente.
