dc.description | The Departamento Nacional da Produção Mineral (DNPM - Brazilian Authority of Mineral Production), through stateowned exploration company CPRM, executed from 1975 to 1981 an exhaustive coal exploration programme in the southern most State of Rio Grande do Sul, determining an almost continuous coaldbelt of some hundreds of kilometers E-W extension and a width of some tenth kilometers N-S. This coaldbelts extends from the Atlantic Coast in the East, through Porto Alegre up to Cachoeira do Sul in the West. The Coal Measures are restricted to the Lower Gondwana Sequence Rio Bonito Formation, of Permian Age. They were formed in epirogenic intraplatform-basins, in straight relationship to the ancient relief. One of the greater individual basins is the Morungava-South, where 83 drill-holes explorated a 90 km2 area. Some tenth of meters above the cristaline basement, the Coal Measures here consist of up to nine seams, three of economic interest (mean thicknesses are 1,07, 1,21, and 2,10 m), in a sequence of only 18 m of grey, pelitic sediments. The coal lies in depth between 100 m in the South and 350 m in the North, with a regional dip of 1º to 2°. While disturbed by basaltic dikes and sills, major fault systems are not known within this basin. Coal is of the dul-layered type, rich in mineral content disseminated within the coal and also as well defined layers. Rank is High Volatile Bituminous B/C, with low coking properties (FSI = 1,5). Mean contents are ash: 53% and sulfur: 1,6%. Reserve base in situ - 600 x 106 t. Reserve base ROM - 360 X 106 t. Sellable production varies with grade required, between 117 x 106 t and 192 x 106 t of steam coal. Mining method proposed is longwall-caving system. | en-US |
