dc.description.abstractThe use of steel hollow sections as well concrete filled steel hollow sections for columns are an interesting solution for the civil construction. Due to its geometric shape they have high resistance to internal forces and stresses. The design for this type of structural element is covered by the ABNT NBR 8800:2008 - Design of steel and composite structures for buildings. Therefore, to account the hollow sections particularities the Brazilian Technical Standards Association recently published the ABNT NBR 16239:2013 - Design of steel and composite structures for buildings using hollow sections, which provides specific rules for steel hollow section for a more accurate design. The aim of this work was to study the advances introduced by the ABNT NBR 16239:2013 design procedures in relation to ABNT NBR 8800:2008. Spreadsheets were structured to perform the design of columns. From the results it was verified the importance of the new rules and procedures presented by de new standard, affecting specially the results for the axial force resistance.
