This work concentrates on describing the evolution of telecommunication networks and its improvements, until the most modern technology nowadays in service provider’s backbones, the MPLS. An internetwork is a collection of individual networks, connected by intermediate networking devices, that functions as a single large efficient and effective network, but with the challenge of supporting communication among disparate technologies. Reference models and standards were created and are described in this work, until the Internet Protocol (IP), the underlying fabric of the Internet. In order to manage the multitude of applications such as streaming video, Voice over IP (VoIP), and others, a network requires Quality of Service (QoS) provided by networks Layer 2, such as ATM, but there were scalability problems. Thus, MPLS is described as an improved method for forwarding packets through a network using information contained in labels attached to each IP packet, ATM cell, or Layer 2 frame. In conclusion, the real benefit to the use of MPLS is that it can be used on any media at any layer that can pass data packets, with its techniques being implemented in service provider networks without.
