This paper presents the activities carried out in the quest for developing the prototype of a digital stethoscope using smartphone. Initially it is presented the importance of Biomedical Engineering in medical solutions, and key concepts of listening to body sounds, focusing on understanding the processes of acquisition of cardiac, pulmonary and gastrointestinal signs. Through digital signal processing approach is discussed the main methods of digital signal filtering, which are a focus of this work. It also presents the evolution of mobile computing, the current technologies for their operating systems, as well as its share of solutions in the medical field. With an understanding of these concepts, we developed an external device and an app for Android® operating system, capable of acquiring and filtering bodily signs, aimed at the implementation of a digital stethoscope. The process of developing the data acquisition system as well as the results of tests and simulations conducted is also presented, providing a final discussion about the importance of smartphone features in medical practice, potential improvements in digital filtering process, and the effective implemented in a digital stethoscope.
