dc.description.abstractThe growth of global fish consumption promotes the intensification of fish farming production. Intensive aquaculture systems exposes fish to numerous stressors, which may negatively affect fish grown and limit the profitability of fish production. Fish production for human consumption must conform to best management pratices. One of this is reduction or, preferably, complete banning the antibiotics in production cycle, favoring the use of additives that improve animal health and growth. This study was set out to evaluate the effect of supplementation of mananoligossaccharideos (MOS) on performance of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were randomly distributed in cages (4.0 m2 area and 1.5 m depth, 20 fish per cage) and fed for 30 days with the experimental diets (0.0, 0.2, 0.4 to 0.8% inclusion of dietary MOS) in a completely randomized design (n = 4). After the experimental period, biometrical data was collected and performance index was calculated. Only feed consumption was affect b y treatments (p<0.05) and fish fed 0.4% dietary MOS showed increased feed consumption, showing that prebiotics mode of action in fish growth and nutrition are still unclear.
