dc.description.abstract | This research presents a case study of sandwich structures. The focus of the research is the material selection of honeycomb composite sandwich. Also it was made an analysis of the prototype idealized by the company Pato Bamboo, a composite composed of fiberglass faces and bamboo culms honeycomb core. The research follows the methods produced by Michael F. Ashby, meeting design constraints, ranking the best candidates for selection, developing data maps, and using the material index concept. The study verified which properties are desired for the materials that compounds the sandwich and what are the factors that influence the material index. For the face structure, it must have high yield strength while the core must have high shear strength. It was observed how the dimensional proportions of the sandwich influence in the material index. The present work found 16 different combinations of honeycomb compounds for the highest material index and generated a 2.15 to 2.55 fold increase in the current Pato Bamboo material index. | |
