Estudo sobre o uso da madeira para fins estruturais e arquitetônicos

Abstract

Bearing in mind the population growth and the depletion of natural resources, it becomes necessary the search for methods and materials with favourable characteristics to supply that demand, and also mitigate the impacts caused to the environment. One considerable alternative to this problem is the use of timber and its derivatives in the construction industry, which have natural origin. Since the pre-fabrication is a rationalized process that optimizes the resources management, they minimize the wastes at the construction site, decreasing the necessary time to the execution and improving the quality of the final product. In Brazil, the use of timber for the purpose of building houses is still under development, and gradually it gains ground in the market by having competitive features and properties in relation to the other structural materials. In this paper was adopted the method of literature review and field research with companies and engineers, to identify the main species of wood and construction techniques, and how they are being applied in Brazil. It was concluded that the industry’s development tends to gradually increase the viability of the use of timber materials for structural and architectural purposes.
