dc.description.abstractRoad safety is a currently theme of extreme concern in many countries, once traffic accidents are one of the main causes of death in the world. The Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) aims to stimulate measures to reduce the number of injuries and deaths from traffic accidents. Brazil, ranks fourth in the world in traffic deaths, in absolute numbers. Paraná, in Brazil, according to the same criteria, is the third state when compared to other Brazilians states. Among the ways to minimize injuries caused by road accidents, it is worth mentioning the reduction of speed, which reduces the severity of the accident and also the possibility at occurrence. The following work is an analysis of changes in road safety with the implementation, in 2015, of the “Área Calma” in the central area of Curitiba, an area submitted a 40km/h. For this, it was used accident data from the rescuing services to the victims, SIATE and SAMU. Initially the area was mapped in detail and then the accidents that occurred within it were selected. The accidents analysis at the region occurred in two forms: the first one was the proportion related to the same types of accidents (users involved and level of injuries).It was observed that in the proportions analyzed, there were no significant variations between before and after. However, when the averages and absolute numbers were compared, a 30% decrease was observed in the period after the measurement. As the measure is recent, it would be necessary to obtain a large database post implantation period to get more detailed and conclusive analysis. However, the present analyses according to the methodology indicate that, even though there were not any significant changes to the typology of accidents, the frequency of accidents showed a reduction after the “Área Calma” implementation.
