The construction of timber structures generally requires joints between the parts that compose them. These joints must ensure security and durability to the structure and be compatible with the evaluated mechanical requests. The equations to the calculation of resistance to joints with steel dowels used in Review NBR 7190 (2012) and EUROCODE 5 (2004) are based upon a theory developed by Johansen (1949),but the Brazilian standard used simplifications. The Review NBR 7190 (2012) criterion for the design of joints for bolts leads to the increase of element number in the joint in relation to the observed one in the EUROCODE 5. In this argument, the objective of this work is the theoretical analysis of the design method results of the Review NBR 7190 (2012) compared to EUROCODE 5 (2004).
