This project was developed with the aim of studying the Editorial Project of the Cartonero Movement, which produces books with cardboard covers, and relating it to the concept of Aesthetics of the Oppressed, which legitimates aesthetical manifestations made by socially oppressed groups. It also discusses the relation between the Cartonero Movement and traditional practices of Editorial Design. The work is constituted by a theoretical framework based on research about the Aesthetics of the Oppressed, the Cartonero Movement and Editorial Design, as well as the analysis of two cartonero collectives — Magnolia Cartonera and Yiyi Jambo Cartonera. Despite the lack of information on alternative Editorial Design practices — such as the production of the Cartonero Movement — in books and thesis on the subject, these practices are extremely rich and their copies bring significant characteristics of the traditional editorial project, and present diverse and innovative aesthetics as well. Therefore, studying the Cartonero Movement contributes to expanding the editorial universe comprehended on the Graphic Design field, giving visibility to socially oppressed groups that explore editorial production as a way of expressing their voices.
